Got an internship. Yeah I did.

Bagged myself a 1 month internship today at We Are Social, near Goodge Street, and I did it almost entirely using Twitter. This is how…

As a follower of various advertising and communications related companies on Twitter I read a tweet that mentioned some interesting work by @wearesocial. Intrigued, I looked at their site, their work and started following them on twitter. Their site is worded fantastically and their whole ethos fitted exactly what I wrote about in my dissertation. It just looked like the kind of place I’d love to work in, so I sent them a tweet. It read something like this:

Tom_1986: “Hey @wearesocial, you fancy taking on an enthusiastic intern? I like you, maybe you’ll like me.”

They replied to me within minutes saying something like this:

Wearesocial: “Thanks for the message @tom_1986, pitch yourself to us and we’ll think about it J”

So I did. They said pitch, so I took that to mean that I should put more of my personality into it than a regular e-mail. I wrote back and got messages back from an Account Director, Leila, who I met today in an interview. Actually let me correct myself, it wasn’t really an interview. It was simply a chat. I like that. That’s what this place, We Are Social, is all about. They talk, chat, communicate, blab, interact and socialise with people.

Leila said I did good in the chat. She told me that I was relaxed and showed her my real personality, which is good because I went in there with the intention of chatting like I would with my mate (except with less of the offensive language that my friends and I inflict upon each other of course!). She was pleased that I brought a folio of work to show her too and glad that I researched the company before hand, apparently some people don’t do that!

I was greatful for her review of how I did so asked for some constructive criticism. She pointed out that when she asked what kind of position I was looking for I was hesitant and didn’t really know what exactly I wanted. True say. I suppose after applying for so many jobs/internships and hearing nothing back I have become open to a job anywhere, doing anything. My goal had become widened and I needed a more specific and defined focus.

If you wanna ask me more questions about this, tweet me. Or comment below.
